Dear Friends and Well Wishers,
DBHF was established for use as a tool to raise monies that will assist in the aftercare costs and cost associated with receiving a heart transplant. No one can control every aspect of their life. Sometimes situations arise that are inconceivable to us and are devastating when they do occur. This is what happened to our father (Markel Crockton) ten (10) years ago when he was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy. As a result of this disease, his heart was unable to efficiently pump blood through his body.
Until this condition was diagnosed, our dad was living a normal and happy life which included teaching in Boston and working on his Masters’ Degree. He also worked in the church (Twelth Baptist Church) and his fraternity (Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.). This disease has changed his life forever.
This condition resulted in a progressive deterioration in his health.
In April 2013, he was placed on the official heart transplant registry and is currently waiting for a new heart to come available. Recently dad underwent two major surgeries’ to have a ventricular assistance device (artificial heart) implanted to perform those functions normally reserved for his heart.
A successful fundraising effort is essential to helping our dad cover the enormous costs associated with this costly operation even though he has good health insurance. You should know and understand that the aftercare costs associated with a heart transplant are not covered by insurance. In our father’s case these costs are estimated to exceed $100,000.00. Additionally, we have been informed by the hospitals finance office that we should anticipate other presently unknown or unspecified (but necessary expenses) and they have recommended that we begin working toward raising funds to meet these costs.
As you support us and as we support our dad, we will work hard to stay focused on school, make a difference in the lives of others, starting with dad, and hopefully we will leave our footprint on the heart of others as we move into the future.
We sincerely appreciate and honor your contributions on behalf of DBHF.
